To be…
Coreografía/intérprete: Alejandra Jara

Synopsis
To be… What does it mean to be a woman…a mother…a lover…a wife…a friend…a child…a champion? Must all these layers interact in order for you to see me? This solo deals with the idea of perceptions, assumptions and expectations of people towards the female experience, based especially upon external appearance and decorum. How do we find, rather than present, ourselves through body language, clothing, and accessories? Do you really see me? Here I am naked in from of you…but still…are you…seeing?
Sinopsis
To be…

My MFA project examined the impact of cultural and living experiences based on travel and how those experiences informed my choreography. The piece Passenger was inspired by my questions about “being in transit” as a point of departure, which later resolved to generate connections in terms of identity, relationships, and the feeling of being in transit. Here I was not only talking about a country, or a specific culture, but about the stages we go through as human beings transferred to movement qualities and sensations. I also used metaphor in terms of movement qualities, space and relationships. Having the bodies collapse, fall, unbalance, shake, struggle, and maybe float was the sustainance of the piece.
Being in transit is a combination of so many things, such us, country, relationships, cultural shock, memories, vulnerability, and change. Experiencing different situations is part of our lives, and is what makes us who we are.

As if…
The encounter is a dialogue, without imposition.
Dialogue is to listen to the other, without assuming.
To hug is to give space, without trapping. (text by Jorge Bucay).
